Investigation 3: Water Vapor
Part 2: Evaporation Location

Lesson Summary

Students will investigate the effect of location/air temperature on the rate of evaporation. Placing equal amounts of water in four cups, the students will choose four different locations to place the cups. Over the course of four days, the class will monitor the temperatures at these locations in the morning and afternoon. On the fifth day, students will measure and compare the amount of water remaining in the cups.

Teacher Background

  • Temperature affects evaporation rate.

Set-up/Management Tips

  1. The first part of this investigation will take 25-30 minutes, then students will need to check temperatures for the next 4 days (5-10 minutes) in the morning and the afternoon. On the fifth day, it will take 20-30 minutes to seriate the cups and discuss results.
