Investigation 5: Bess Beetles, Part 4: Choose Your Own Investigation

Lesson Summary

These investigations are student-driven, depending on which area of the unit they would like to further research.  Depending on how many days you allot for this, the students can use their own questions that you have been keeping track of throughout the unit, or you can use Student Sheets 21-23 to guide them.  The students research and create their projects and present them to the class.

Teacher Background

These investigations allow students to learn more about topics they found interesting during the unit.  Depending on your group of students and the time of the year, you will need to provide a varying amount of guidance as to the direction of the projects and help in the management of the materials.

Set-up/Management Tips

  1. Students can be grouped in “interest” groups so you have fewer projects going on at the same time.
  2. Keep a list of materials the students will need for the next class, that way they are ready to start at the beginning of each class.
  3. Poster paper works well for the students to use when presenting their projects.
