Investigation 5: Bess Beetles, Part 2: Comparing Crayfish and Beetles
|
|
Lesson Summary
This is a two-part lesson in which the students will compare the structures of the crayfish and bess beetle. During the first part of the lesson, the students will use Student Sheet 32 (top portion) to record observations about their beetle. Then they will fill out the bottom portion of the sheet with observations about the beetle behaviors. In the second part of the lesson, the students will use Student Sheet 33 to create a Venn diagram comparing the beetle and crayfish structures. You will then create a t-chart to list each structure and its function.
Teacher Background
This is another good lesson for having students practice their recording skills. Again, you will want to remind them why it is important to take good notes, and model how. If you have the students create the t-chart on their own, it can be used as an assessment for this section of the unit.
Set-up/Management Tips
- Try to locate and separate the beetles before class, since they can hide in their habitat.
- At some point, you will need to quiet the class down so they can hear the beetles making sounds.
- You will need a class Venn diagram and t-chart.
