Investigation 3: Meet the Crayfish, Part 1: Meet the Crayfish

 

Lesson Summary

In this lesson the students become acquainted with the crayfish.  They will handle the crayfish for the first time, point out the different structures, and record their findings.  The students will also label a diagram of a crayfish, which will show them how to determine its sex. 

Teacher Background

This lesson is set up to help students become comfortable handling the crayfish, as well as learn about the different structures of a crayfish and functions of each.

Set-up/Management Tips

  1. Have water ready to pour into the crayfish feeding basins
  2. When each group is assigned a crayfish, use whiteout on the carapace to denote which group it belongs to.
  3. Make an overhead or large poster of Student Sheet 12 (the crayfish diagram), to fill out as a class.
