Investigation 2: Growing Further, Part 2: Hydroponics
Focus Question: What do plants need to grow?
|
|
Lesson Summary
A class discussion about what the bean plants need in order to grow further will be followed by an introduction to hydroponics. The class will set up two hydroponic water tanks to continue growing the bean seedlings.
Teacher Background
Many students believe that the bean plants need soil in order to grow any further. Although most of the plants your students have seen grow in soil, with proper nutrition and support, some plants can grow in just water. You can find both cucumbers and tomatoes at the grocery store that have been grown hydroponically. The bean plants that your class sets up will receive nutrition from a water-based nutrient solution and a straw structure will provide support for the plants.
Set-up/Management Tips
-
Be sure to take the time to read through the information and/or watch the teacher preparation video to become familiar with the hydroponic set up.
-
You will need to have a place in your room where the two tanks can continue their growth for 2 months. A window location is ideal, but if it is not possible, place the hydroponic containers under a light source (75 watt bulb) during every school day.
