Investigation 1: Origin of Seeds, Part 2: The Sprouting Seed
|
|
Lesson Summary
Students use two kinds of sprouting devices: small group and a whole class sprouter, to find out what effect water has on seeds. They water the seeds daily for a week and record their observations.
Teacher Background
In addition to setting up a class sprouter; each group will set up an individual sprouter. Students will observe daily changes in the seeds that have been placed in the sprouters with water. The seeds will swell, sprout and grow.
Set-up/Management Tips
- Be sure to set up the Class Sprouter ahead of time and run water through it using the procedure included on page 19 of the teacher’s manual.
- Bring bleach from home. Mix up the bleach solution (5ml of bleach to 2 liters tap water).
- Count out seeds for Class sprouter and minisprouters following directions on page 20-21 of the teacher’s manual.
- Check sprouters for moldy seeds daily. Be sure to remove moldy seeds before they contaminate the other seeds.
- Students will be recording changes in the seeds over 6 days. Set aside a regular observation time (10-15 min.) in order to make this a simple routine for the class.
