Plant Growth and Development

Lesson 8: Why Are Bees Important? (Cover during Grow Days 9 - 13)

Lesson Summary

Students will brainstorm all that they currently know about bees, which will lead into better understanding of pollination in future lessons.

Teacher Background

This information gathering can be used to gather and assess student preconceptions about bees.  It can also be used as more formal pre-assessment data, followed up with post-unit assessment.  There are many terrific books and DVD’s to share and learn about bees.  This initial information collection is done in conjunction with measuring, observing, and recording about plant growth.

Set-up/Management Tips

  1. You will need a sheet of plain paper for each student, if you are going to collect information for pre-assessment.
  2. Chart paper is needed, if you are going to gather KWL whole class.
  3. Be sure to think ahead about books, DVD’s/videos, and models you might want to use in Lessons 8, 9 and 10.
