Lesson Summary
The children will continue gathering observing, measuring, and recording about their plants throughout this time. They will notice that the flowers will begin to wither and die. The upward growth and development of new true leaves, buds, and flowers will begin to slow then stop. The plant is now beginning to put its energy into developing seed pods.

Teacher Background
If fertilization has occurred, the plant will now put most of its energy into producing seeds and the seed pods in which they grow. The ovary at the base of the pistil (which contained the ovules before fertilization) lengthens and widens to accommodate the developing seeds. It is recommended to have students record on Grow Days 17, 24 and 31 to develop their understanding of this change in growth.
Set-up/Management Tips
The plants will be growing at varying rates. Groups can color code planter labels, so plants can be arranged under the lighting system by height and found more easily. Then you can raise one side of the lights higher than the other to accommodate taller plants and still give all plants optimal light.
