Acquiring new vocabulary should be a natural extension of the learning, as students find a need to use scientific vocabulary in their oral and written communication. For teacher convenience we have compiled a list of science vocabulary words related to this unit. The intent is that learners grow in their understanding and accurate use of scientific vocabulary. Most of the words have come from the glossary in the teacher guide book, but this list does not contain definitions. This list is not intended for students to simply memorize the terms. Teachers will determine individual student need to acquire specific vocabulary. Some students will need the challenge of using all words on the list in spoken and written language, while others will be challenged with an abbreviated list.
A list of Word Wall Words related to the Magnets and Motors unit is provided below. The intent is that the words can be posted in the room for individual and whole class reference as they come up in the unit and as learners have a need for the new vocabulary words. It is helpful for students to have a visual for scientific vocabulary needed throughout the unit. Learners can use the words to record more accurately in their notebooks, and Word Walls often help children to recall words necessary to communicate their ideas in oral or written communication.
