Lesson Summary
This lesson consists of a series of pre-unit assessment exercises. Students discuss what they already know about magnets and motors, and they learn to record their thoughts and activities in a student notebook or journal. You can use the information gathered in this lesson as a way to tailor the unit to the needs of the class. You and your students also will be able to use this information to gauge what students have learned as they progress.
Teacher Background
Students should set up their science notebook beginning with a table of contents. As students formulate questions about their experiences, it is helpful for them to reflect on what they have learned. The student’s notebook provides a record of their questions, ideas, and experiences. Teachers can use the notebook to assess student learning. The pre-test suggested in this lesson can be compared with the post-test at the end of the unit to demonstrate development in student’s thinking.
Set-up/Management Tips
