Learning Experience: Simple Machines Scavenger Hunt, Session Number: 9
|
|
Lesson Summary
Students go on a scavenger hunt for things that make work easier. They discuss what things they find, how they work, and what they accomplish. Afterwards, they generate a longer list of machines or tools that help to lift things. They categorize that list in a variety of ways, keeping in mind what they have already learned about simple machines.
Teacher Background
Students will understand that simple machines are tools that help us to do work and are all around us. Simple machines can be found inside more complex machines.
Set-up/Management Tips
- Make a copy of the Science Notebook Page (p. 121) for each student.
- Decide how you will conduct the scavenger hunt. Some suggestions include sending different groups to different parts of the building, walking through the building as a class, and going to a hardware store. On the chalkboard create two columns with the following headings: “Uses” and “Machine/Tools.”
- If you decide to take your students outside for the scavenger hunt, arrange for adult supervisors to accompany the class.
