Human Body

Investigation 2: Joints, Part 2: Doing Joint Tasks

Lesson Summary

Students continue their investigation of joints by taping up their finger in other ways to immobilize certain fingers of or their thumbs.

Teacher Background

Articulated hands with opposable thumbs are essential for performing intricate tasks.  The most important joint in the human body is the thumb joint.  Bones meet at joints in several distinctive ways.  The body has at least four other kinds of moving joints that are anatomically distinct.

Set-up/Management Tips

  1. Teacher will make decisions based on classroom situation regarding stations for tasks or small teams working with materials at their desks.
  2. Students need to tape fingers or thumbs firmly in order to limit movement of joints. (Refer to pictures in teacher’s manual p. 14)
  3. Make sure the eight task packages are prepared ahead of time (packages should be ready in kit).
  4. Copy any journal sheets needed for this activity.
