Investigation 1: Bones, Part 1: Counting Bones

Lesson Summary
Students start by observing the human body in motion. Students discuss what moves during rope jumping and focus their attention on the bones. Students count the number of the bones in the skeleton.

A human body can move in many ways. A skeleton is a system of bones. There are about 206 bones in the human skeleton. Bones have several functions: support, protection, and locomotion.
Set-up/Management Tips
- Locate a room/space large enough for the jump rope activity.
- Locate a place in the classroom to hang large skeleton poster that is accessible to children.
- Have chart paper available for bone tally chart.
- Have poster of leg, arm, head, and torso available for activity.
- Copy any journal sheets needed for this activity.
