Habitats

Learning Experience 8: Inviting Minibeasts for an Extended Classroom Visit, Session 1

Lesson Summary

  1. Drawing on all that they have learned about microhabitats and minibeasts, students are asked to create a terrarium that will be an appropriate habitat for an organism for an extended classroom visit.

Teacher Background

This is a great time to assess student knowledge of microhabitats and the basic needs that must be present for the organism to live and survive.  They should be able to talk about the items they put in their terrarium and why they put it there.

Set-up/Management Tips

  1. Divide your class into cooperative groups that would work on creating a terrarium together.
  2. Have the sand, potting soil, and charcoal out in a central, easily-accessible place.
  3. ***Allow 5-10 minutes a day for a couple of days for observation before continuing on with Learning Experience 9.
