Habitats

Learning Experience 5: Life within the Hoop (Embedded Assessment), Session Number:  5

Lesson Summary

Session 1: Students return to their hoop spot and record as many different plants as they see on Science Notebook Page A questions one and two.  They then search for minibeasts to bring back to the classroom for a brief visit and respond to question three.

Session 2: Students collect their bug boxes and work to classify their minibeast according to the pre-prepared bug cards on a bulletin board.  Students make drawings of their creatures.  Complete Science Notebook Pate B. Discuss finds and return minibeasts outside.

Session 3:  As a class, compile findings from Notebook Page A and have students discuss what characteristics of a site make it a place where many organisms can live.

Teacher Background

Students continue to grow in their hoop site observation skills.  They can return to the same site used in lesson 4 or they can explore a new site.  Students continue to build on their understanding of how plants and animals use their habitats to meet their needs.  Students also begin to learn about the diversity of organisms that can survive in the same habitat as well as the interdependence of these organisms. This lesson is an embedded assessment in which you will observe students to see if they are able to apply observation, data collection, and communication skills learned in previous lessons.

Set-up/Management Tips

  1. This lesson takes 3 45-minute sessions.
  2. Be sure you review ground rules for the hoop study areas.  (i.e. always walk, use inside voice, stay at your hoop site...)
  3. The recording sheets for this session can be confusing for students, be sure to model recording in the classroom first.
  4. Bring extra pencils in case students lose or break the ones they brought.
  5. Provide students with clipboards for their recording sheet.
  6. Hula-Hoops are great for marking study areas.
  7. You will need to copy student sheets A and B at the end of the lesson.
  8. Copy, cut out, and post the minibeast pictures found at the end of this lesson.  You can post them on a bulletin board or chart paper.
  9. You can use stick notes instead of index cards for student minibeast drawings in session 2.
