Learning Experience 3: Discovering Our Neighborhood Habitat, Session Number 3

Lesson Summary
Students go on a neighborhood walk and record their observations on their Science Notebook Page to tally needs that can be fulfilled in the school neighborhood. After the walk students discuss whether the school neighborhood habitat is complete or incomplete.
Teacher Background
Before going on the neighborhood walk you will review the previous lesson on the school habitat exploration with students. Students will build on their understanding of complete and incomplete habitats in this lesson.
Set-up/Management Tips
- You will need one 45 minutes session for the walk and one 20 minutes session for the discussion with this lesson.
- Check with your school office to see if you need signed field trip permission slips for students to be involved in this walk.
- Be sure you set ground rules for the walk. (i.e. walking in partners, stop look and listen before crossing each street…)
- Bring extra pencils in case students lose or break the ones they brought.
- Provide students with clipboards for this walk.
