Habitats

Learning Experience 10: New Eyes on the Old Neighborhood, Session 1, 2, & 3

Unit Home

Lesson Summary

As a class, students create a neighborhood habitat mural that shows the diversity of microhabitats that exist within the school neighborhood.

Teacher Background

You and your students will be revisiting the neighborhood and taking a closer look at the microhabitats present.  Take this opportunity to assess the student’s observation skills, use of scientific vocabulary in conversation, and ability to find and thoughtfully discuss the microhabitats.  Be prepared to point some out along the way.

Set-up/Management Tips

  1. Prepare a simple map of the neighborhood you’ll be walking through.
  2. Collect materials for the mural- art supplies, string, cotton, small sticks, leaves, pebbles, etc.
  3. Arrange for adult support, if needed.
  4. Choose a day with nice weather.  Bring a camera to take pictures of the microhabitats found within the neighborhood.  These can become part of/ or be displayed with the mural.
