Lesson Summary
This lesson is a continuation of the previous lesson. However, the students are using objects provided in the kit. They will use the same objects in future lessons. The set of 14 objects vary in weight, size, design, and material. Students focus on the affect that weight and size have on whether an object floats or sinks. Students make and test predictions, and explain their thinking regarding floating and sinking.
Teacher Background
Students begin to observe the affect that the variables of weight, size, and design have on whether an object floats or sinks. Students’ observations may change some of their previously held theories about floating and sinking.
Set-up/Management Tips
- When students begin to use the bag of objects, the number of objects should be counted to ensure that they are there for future lessons.
- Prior to the lesson, divide clay into equal portions, and store in separate bags from the objects.
- Set up multiple testing stations.
- The objects need to be dried off thoroughly before they are returned to the bag.
- If water has been saved in containers, it can be reused for this investigation.
