Lesson Summary
Students will use the data they generated in the two tropism experiments to try to draw some conclusions about how Wisconsin Fast Plants respond to light and gravity. They also will criticize the experimental designs and suggest other designs that might work as well as or better. Activity Sheet 10 included at the end of this lesson is an effective way to assess how much students have learned about tropisms.
Teacher Background
During this lesson, students analyze data from the tropisms experiments. An underlying theme of this lesson is honesty in scientific experimentation. This is a very mature theme. Depending on the maturity of your class and the level of their interest in the topic, you might incite some very lively discussions. Try peppering the lesson with some of these questions:
-
Can we trust the data? Are measurements precise? Are they recorded accurately?
-
Do the data support the conclusion? Is it reasonable to draw that conclusion from these data? Exactly where do the data say that? Have you “jumped to a conclusion” that the data does not support?
-
Things do not always turn out the way you want them to. Should you change the data to fit your conclusion?
