Earth Materials

Investigation 4: Take It for Granite, Part 2: Choosing Your Own Investigation

Lesson Summary

This investigation gives learners the opportunity to review everything they have done and learned about in the Earth Materials unit.  Learners are then able to self-select a topic to investigate further.

Teacher Background

This investigation offers up an opportunity for a student-led inquiry investigation.  If teachers have been documenting student learning and questions on a class chart throughout the unit, students can refer to this chart to help direct their investigation.  The Assessment section of the FOSS manual provides options for performance assessments related to this investigation.

Set-up/Management Tip

  1. This part could take up to 1 – 2 weeks, depending on student investigations.
  2. The learners may need extra materials and resources, depending on the focus of their investigations.
