Balance and Motion

Investigation 3: Rollers, Part 2: Rolling Cups

Lesson Summary

Students investigate how the different diameters on the top and bottom of a cup affect the motion of cup rolling down a ramp.  Students they use this knowledge to help them meet the rolling challenges posed by the teacher.  Students will also have the opportunity to experiment with adding weight to their rolling systems to see how/if weight affects rolling motion.

Teacher Background

During this lesson students discover that cups will roll down a ramp in the direction of the small end.  They will learn how to make a straight roller with cups and will discover that the amount and location of weight added to a rolling system does affect the way it rolls.

Set-up/Management Tips

  1. You will need 50 minutes to teach this lesson.
  2. As in the rolling wheels lesson you will be introducing materials at different times for different challenges.  In order for students to have multiple experiences, it is important not to pass out all materials at once.
  3. Before class have chart paper ready for recording content chart items.
