Investigation 2: Spinners, Part 3: Twirlers
|
|
Lesson Summary
By building paper helicopters, students see how linear motion can be translated into spinning motion.
Teacher Background
Students investigate different designed paper helicopters in this lesson. Through their investigations students discover that design variations can change the rotation of spinning objects. They also learn that air resistance and gravity are pushing and pulling forces.
Set-up/Management Tips
- You will need two 30-40 minute sessions to teach this lesson.
- Before class copy the Twirler Wings and Twirly Birds sheets. These are located in the Investigation Duplication Masters section of the manual.
- For this lesson it works best to lay materials out on a table for students to gather. You will need to demonstrate how to cut out each set of paper wings unless you prepare them in advance for students.
- Students will investigate the Twirler Wings on day one of this lesson. They will investigate Twirly Birds on day two of this lesson. Students should compare the Twirler Wings to the Twirly Birds.
- Before class have chart paper ready for recording content chart items.
