Investigation 2: Spinners, Part 2: Zoomers
|
|
Lesson Summary
Students construct and experiment with this classic toy. By pulling the string taut, students see a large increase in the speed of the spin as the radius of rotation shrinks.
Teacher Background
In this lesson, students find out there are different ways to initiate spinning motion. They will discover that the motion of an object can be changed with a pushing or pulling force.
Set-up/Management Tips
- You will need 30-40 minutes to teach this lesson.
- Before class it works well to put enough materials in a plastic bag to enable each student in a group to make a Zoomer. Each student will need one red disk and a piece of string about 100 cm long.
- You will need to model how to make a Zoomer and how to start the spinning motion of the Zoomer for students.
- Before class have chart paper ready for recording content chart items.
