Balance and Motion

Investigation 1: Balance, Part 4: Mobiles

Lesson Summary

Students express themselves creatively by constructing mobiles and demonstrating what they have learned about balance in this embedded assessment.

Teacher Background

Students solidify the concepts of balance, counterbalance, and stability.  They do this by making a mobile and learning that it is a system of balanced beams and objects.

Set-up/Management Tips

  1. This lesson will take about 50 minutes
  2. Before class be sure you copy the Mobile Posters found in Investigation Duplication Masters section of the manual (These can be front/back).
  3. Before class it works well to put enough materials in a plastic bag to enable each student in a group to make Mobile 2.  This saves material pass out time.
  4. Students need to punch holes in their index cards with a pushpin.  It works well for them to set their index cards on a piece of cardboard and then push the pin through into the cardboard.  This helps avoid injury.
  5. Students enjoy being able to decorate their mobiles, allow time for this.
  6. Early finishers could work with materials from the three previous balance investigations.
  7. Before class have chart paper ready for recording content chart items.
