Computer Assisted Mandatory Training
Various regulations mandate employers to provide training to employees on a variety of subjects. The training you are required to have is dependent on the work you do. Web based computer assisted training programs are available in the areas Child and Dependent Adult Abuse, Bloodborne Pathogens, Lock Out Tag Out, and Right to Know. Asbestos Awareness and 504 Accommodations are under development and will be added in the future. Certificates will be sent upon successfully completion of each course.
Computer Assisted Mandatory Reporting of Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Training
The Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training program meets current state requirements and has been approved by the State Abuse Education Review Panel. After September 1, 2002, any person applying for ". . . ANY LICENSE ISSUED BY THE BOEE must submit documentation of completion of the child and dependent adult abuse training approved by the state abuse education review panel before his/her license can be renewed (BOEE 01/29/02)." Employees new to a district that do not meet this requirement must complete the training within the first six months of employment and as a condition of employment this training must be completed every five years.
Computer Assisted Bloodborne Pathogens
All employees determined to have occupational exposure are required by OSHA regulation CFR29 Bloodborne pathogens. - 1910.1030 to receive training at the time of initial assignment or as changes in the work place require. In addition, employees are required to be given "refresher training" annually that includes a review of the training materials and current information on changes or conditions in the workplace.
Computer Assisted Lockout/Tagout Training
OSHA Regulation CFR29 - 1910.147 requires employers to provide employees who "service or maintain equipment or machines" training in the control of hazardous energy that could result in injury to the employee when unexpectedly released. Personnel that are typically required to be provided this training are maintenance and custodial staff, mechanics, crafts or trades people, warehouse workers, food service employees, employees working on or around grounds keeping equipment, and others. In addition the regulations require that other employees who work in the area where the maintenance or service work is being performed be aware of the program in place and be instructed in their responsibility to the program. Training is required at the time of assignment or reassignment, annually, or as conditions in the workplace change.
Computer Assisted Right to Know
OSHA Regulation CFR29 - 1910.1200 requires employers to provide employees exposed to chemicals in the workplace with training. Training is required at the time of assignment or reassignment, annually, or as conditions in the workplace change. Typically, all designated staff are to receive the training.
Computer Assisted Asbestos Awareness
The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR 40-763) requires local education agencies to ensure, prior to the implementation of the O & M Provisions of the management plan, that all members of its maintenance and custodial staff (custodians, electricians, heating/air conditioning engineers, plumbers, etc.) who may work in a building that contains asbestos to receive awareness training of at least 2 hours, whether or not they are required to work with asbestos. New custodial and maintenance employees shall be trained within 60 days after commencement of employment.
Substitute Authorization Class
This course is designed to meet the requirements for the Substitute Authorization Program. The program addresses the four components required by the Board of Educational Examiners: Classroom Management - Participants will develop an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior that will enable them to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self motivation. Strategies for Learning - Participants will develop skills to use a variety of learning strategies that encourage student development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills. Diversity - Participants will develop an understanding of how students differ in their approaches to learning, will be able to create learning opportunities that are equitable and are adaptable to diverse learners, and will develop an understanding of the diversity within the classroom. Ethics - Participants will develop an understanding of how to foster relationships with parents, school colleagues, and organizations in the larger community to support student learning and development and become aware of the Board`s Rules of Professional Practice and Code of Ethics. Upon successful completion of the program the participant may apply to the Board of Educational Examiners for a license. Successful completion of this course leads to the Iowa Substitute Authorization. Receiving a Substitute Authorization will allow an individual to substitute in a middle school, junior high school, or high school for no more than five consecutive days in one job assignment. An individual who holds a Paraeducator Certificate AND completes this course will be authorized to substitute in the special education classroom in which the individual paraeducator is employed. Effective September 5, 2007 this special education classroom may be on the elementary level as well as the middle school, junior high school or high school level.
A Substitute Authorization is not the same as a Substitute License. Local school districts have the option of hiring individuals with the Substitute Authorization. It does not guarantee employment. Please check with your local district.

Audience: Persons with BS or BA outside of Education and Certified Paraeducators who want to become authorized to substitute teach in middle school/jr high or high school classrooms
Registration: Complete registration form or register electronically at least two weeks in advance.
Fees: Registration is not complete until all fees are paid in full two weeks in advance of the first class. A $25 materials fee is included with other fees. Total for credit = $105 paid in full at the time of registering.
