Introduction to SIOP
Classroom research by Drs. Deborah Short and Jana Echevarria demonstrated specific steps to help ESL students acquire the English language, and the language of the content area. They also learned that teachers who work collaboratively to reflect on and analyze their teaching were often able to improve achievement. Because many features of the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) Model are not limited to EL students, but exemplify good teaching for all students in all content areas, this course introduces teachers to the concept of sheltered instruction in gneral, to the SIOP Model in particular, and how the framework can be used in classroom instruction for ELs and students of all capabilities.

Struggling math students may have difficulty with the math because they cannot easily decode or comprehend what they are reading. Science students may love lab work and science concepts, but retreat from it because the vocabulary and scientific language is difficult. Students who highlight their history textbooks but cannot summarize what they have read probably struggle because of weak reading or literacy skills. This course introduces content area teachers to critical reading strategies that can be applied effectively in the teaching of their disciplines.
