Are you surfing for information on assistive technology? This session will focus on tools that can be used to find what you need. Vendor websites, software/overlays/special access features to download, and other on-line resources will be featured for use with students of various abilities.

Boardmaker- Beginning Level
Boardmaker vs. 5 or newer software is a graphics database containing over 3,000 Picture Communication Symbols in clip art form. This training will introduce new users to the basic functions and features with several hands-on activities. Ideas of ways to use this program with regular and special needs students will be discussed.

Co:Writer & Write:OutLoud
Learn about the features and benefits of these two programs for struggling students. Co:Writer is a word prediction program that allows people to write with whole words. Write:OutLoud is a talking word processor with a talking spell checker. It allows students to listen as they write as well as for students who need to review their writing auditorally for reinforcement and proofing. These products are available on both Mac and Windows platforms. This session will be utilizing the Mac version.

Kurzweil 3000: An Introduction
This session is an introduction to Kurzweil 3000, a reading, writing, and learning software solution for struggling students. It is an overview of the basic features of Kurzweil 3000 and is intended for those teachers/parents who currently have access to the software program. Kurzweil 3000 is widely recognized as a comprehensive and integrated solution for addressing language and literacy difficulties. The software uses a multi-sensory approach presenting printed or electronic text on the computer screen with added visual and audible accessibility. The product incorporates a host of dynamic features including powerful decoding, study skills, writing and test taking tools designed to adapt to each individual’s learning style and to minimize frustration for both the learner and educator.

IntelliKeys & the IntelliTools Products
Learn how easy it is to use the IntelliKeys, an alternate keyboard that works with most models of Macintosh (including Powerbooks and Power Macs), and IBM and compatibles. This introductory level will provide an opportunity to explore the seven standard overlays and their use with different educational software. Demonstrations and/or individualized training on IntelliTools software products such as IntelliPics, Overlay Maker, IntelliTalk and ClickIt! are also options for this session. This will be taught on the Mac platform.

Low Tech Tools for Inclusive Education (The LoTTIE Kit)
This presentation highlights a collection of low and mid assistive technology tools designed to help students in reading, writing, math and organizational skills. Along with opportunities for hands-on use with the tools, a handout of product descriptions and ordering information will also be available.

Technology Supports for Struggling Readers and Writers
Assistive Technology offers many solutions and supports that can alleviate the frustration of students who struggle in the area of reading and writing. This workshop will focus specifically on those tools and strategies that can enhance the success that students can experience with reading and writing tasks in the classroom. The use of color, portable word processors, talking word processors, text readers and word prediction software will be discussed and demonstrated.

Top Ten Assistive Technology Tools
This 1 ½ hour presentation gives participants an overview of ten categories of assistive technology tools. A continuum of low-high tech tools will be introduced for use with struggling students in the classroom. Demonstration of tools and strategies that compensate, add speech, portability, color and facilitate reading, note-taking, organization, handwriting and worksheet completion will be demonstrated and discussed.

Voice Recognition Software
Are you interested in using speech recognition software for your students who have difficulty with keyboarding in creating text? This inservice offers an overview and demonstration of speech recognition software packages for both Windows and Mac platforms.

Writing With Symbols
This session will introduce users of Writing With Symbols to the features of this powerful word/picture processing program. Writing With Symbols is a teacher/parent tool that allows you to type words and have the option of having picture symbols quickly pop in with each word. WWS 2000 is a program with 3 primary purposes:
• Allows teachers and parents to make picture materials.
• Allows nontext ready individuals to write with pictures.
• Allows text users to have a talking word processing program with a pictorial spell checker
