Grant Wood AEA's Open Minds, Open Doors Conference planned Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012
16th year for STEM conference for middle school girls

Grant Wood Area Education Agency will host the Open Minds, Open Doors Conference for middle school girls on Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The event will be held at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.
Approximately 500 girls in 7th-8th grades representing 29 schools will participate in the conference, which encourages girls to pursue career fields with foundations in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Anne Michael Langguth, Miss Iowa 2009 and an alumna of “Open Minds, Open Doors,” will welcome participants. Langguth is a 2009 graduate of Harvard University with a degree in Government, and is currently attending The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.
Professional women working in STEM-related careers will participate as volunteer presenters. Also featured will be presentations by the Coe College Physics Department, University of Iowa Gross Anatomy, and Workplace Learning Connection.
The STEM Expo will feature presenters from Kirkwood Community College, University of Iowa Department of Pathology, Schneider Electric, the State Hygienic Lab at the University of Iowa, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Cedar Rapids Vision in Motion, Indian Creek Nature Center, Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency, Kennedy High School Electric Car Program, iTforTeens, Coe College, and Rockwell Collins.
The Open Minds, Open Doors Conference originated in 1996 as an initiative of the Cedar Rapids Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) with support from Coe College.
