College for Kids enters its 22^nd year

Cedar Rapids...Since 1987, Grant Wood AEA’s College for Kids has provided summer enrichment opportunities for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students in Area 10.

Approximately 500 students are registered for the second session of the 2008 College for Kids, which is planned July 14-25. Classes will be held Monday through Friday from 8:30-11:50 a.m. at Coe College in Cedar Rapids

The first session of College for Kids scheduled June 16-27 was cancelled due to the flood.

Grant Wood AEA’s College for Kids is a summer enrichment program offering advanced level academic and fine arts courses in the college setting to talented and gifted students who have completed sixth, seventh, or eighth grade.

Sessions are planned in the areas of Science, Math, Special Interests, Literature & Writing, Social Studies/History, World Languages, and the Arts. New courses for the 2008 session include Japanese, Awesomely Weird Art, Graphic Design, and History Writers Workshop.

Susie Green, GWAEA student programs specialist, explained that students who are eligible have the opportunity to participate in College for Kids. “Students are identified for either the College for Kids Academic Enrichment strand or the Art/Fine Art strand by their school,” she explained. 

Green estimates that more than 13,000 students in Area 10 have participated in approximately 600 different College for Kids classes since the program began in 1987. “College for Kids has a fantastic group of committed instructors returning again this year, many of whom have taught since the program began in 1987.”

Grant Wood Area Education Agency provides instructional and school management services for 33 school districts and 22 approved nonpublic schools in Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn, and Washington counties.
