Grant Wood AEA's College for Kids celebrates 20 years of summer enrichment classes for students
|
Cedar Rapids…Since 1987, Grant Wood AEA’s College for Kids has provided summer enrichment opportunities for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students in Area 10.
Nearly 1,000 students will participate in the 2007 College for Kids sessions planned June 18-29 and July 9-20. Classes will be held Monday through Friday from 8:30-11:50 a.m. at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.
Grant Wood AEA’s College for Kids is a summer enrichment program offering advanced level academic and fine arts courses in the college setting to talented and gifted students who have completed sixth, seventh, or eighth grade.
New courses for the 2007 College for Kids include Screenwriting, Math Power, Stock Market, and a class to include a “mock” national political convention.
Susie Green, GWAEA student programs specialist, explained that students who are eligible have the opportunity to participate in College for Kids. “ Students are identified for either the College for Kids Academic Enrichment strand or the Art/Fine Art strand by their school,” Green explained.
“Through the College for Kids experience, students are offered an introduction to advanced curricula more commonly found at the high school and college level,” she continued. “Students can also select classes to further explore a hobby or a topic of interest not typically available in middle school general education.”
Green estimates that more than 11,900 students in Area 10 have participated in approximately 600 different College for Kids classes since the program began in 1987. “College for Kids has experienced a long history of success due to the ongoing support of students, parents, teachers, and the course instructors,” Green commented.
Grant Wood Area Education Agency provides instructional and school management services for 33 school districts and 20 approved nonpublic schools in Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn, and Washington counties.
