If student and staff goals are to be successfully achieved, the key will be how well your technology plan's professional development element is thought out and designed.
As you write your plan's professional development element, you should keep in mind the following:
- Learning is best done with a fresh mind and body. Professional development activities scheduled at the end of a full school day may be doomed to failure since the participants will be tired by the time the activity begins.
- Think about using technology savvy students as teachers in some professional development activities.
- Work with your Area Education Agency (AEA) as a partner as you build your professional development schedule.
- Not all professional development activities need to be in presenter-led settings. Here are some examples of alternative methods:
- CD-ROM-based training materials
- DVD-based training materials
- Videotape-based training materials
- Web-based training materials
Remember that not all professional development should focus on how to operate hardware and software. Many of your professional development activities should focus on how to appropriately integrate technologies into the curriculum.
Sample Goals
- A variety of staff development opportunities in technology will be made available to staff members of the XXXXXXXX School District throughout the school year and summer.
- The XXXXXXXX School District will facilitate the efforts of staff members who seek appropriate professional development opportunities outside of the district's professional development program.
Sample Actions
- A student technology leadership team will be developed. This team will consist of high school students who wish to take leadership roles in the implementation of technology across the district, and who wish to act as technology trainers for both student training sessions and staff development activities.
- The XXXXXXXX School District will create a budget line item which will provide funding for staff members wishing to attend classes and workshops outside of the district's regular staff development program. Staff members wishing to apply for these funds must submit an application to the District Technology Committee.
