What is Autism?

As defined by the Autism Society of Iowa, autism is a developmental disability. This means that it begins early in life and lasts for the rest of a person's life. Autism is a neurological disorder that interferes with normal development of reasoning and communication skills. It makes learning difficult and can lead to serious behavior problems.

People with autism have great difficulty understanding both language and social behavior. This affects their ability to communicate with others and relate to the world around them.

Autism Spectrum Disorders occurs in approximately one of every 2,000 births and in every known ethnics and racial group. It is more prevalent than cancer, diabetis, Spina Bifida and Down Syndrome. It is 4 times more common in males than in females.

There is agreement that autism is caused by biological differences in the brain. Medical research continues to seek a better understanding of this disorder. Scientific evidence makes it clear that autism is not caused by parents, or the family environment.

Autism creates problems in the ability to relate, understand, communicate, behave appropriately, and learn consistently in an ever-changing world.
