Advisor, Teacher, Role Model, Friend is a manual on being a mentor to students in Science and Engineering authored by the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine.

Contemporary Issues in Mentoring by Jean Baldwin Grossman, editor (June 1999, 100 pages) can be downloaded at this site.

National Mentoring Partnership is an advocate for the expansion of mentoring and a resource for mentors and mentoring initiatives nationwide. This site offers good materials for use in a mentoring program.

Mentoring Programs to Prepare Youth for College offers practical information for establishing, maintaining, and evaluating mentoring programs. This is part of the "Yes You Can" guide, Oct. 1998, from the US Dept. of Education.

Ask an Expert On-line

These digital reference services are linking questions from the K-12 education community to expert respondents. This is an emerging service, but is one educators can explore and students can possibly use to gather information from an expert in a career pathway of interest.

All Experts is a free service that features thousands of volunteers in the areas of medicine, arts, TV, sports, music, travel, humanities, love, education, business, religion and more waiting to answer your one-on-one questions via e-mail, and all for free! Select "Careers" from the main index list, and then select the career area in which you are interested. Below the list of experts is an index to volunteers for responding to questions in topics that some may wish students not engage (at least from the school environment). Please review before using with students.

Ask an Expert.com is a fabulous resource for career-minded students and guidance counselors. The site has an entire Career/ Industry category just for asking career questions. However, regardless of which web site category an expert is in, career-type questions are always appropriate.

Ask an Expert Page Suitable for all grades the Ask an Expert Page provides links to experts in a number of different categories. One of the greatest values of the World Wide Web is the people that are part of the Internet community. This site offers a quick one-step process for finding experts in any field.

Building the Virtual Reference Desk is an article describing a virtual reference with a list of links at the end of the article. Some good links students could or teachers can use to gather information from experts.

XpertSite.com Connects people with questions to people with answers. Just sign in with an e-mail address to ask a question, or read answers to previous questions.
